Badacsony
Badacsony
Nestled in the Tapolca basin, the Badacsony region comprises a pocket of volcanic cones and hills clustered behind the flat-topped, 400-metre-high Badacsony Hill. There are four villages in the area, but it is the resort settled in the bump of shoreline pressing out slightly into the lake that is the main hub. It is a picturesque spot, with some excellent beaches and walking trails – and wine galore!
The
József Egry Memorial Museum showcases the work of an artist who has been compared in style with William Turner, and who was similarly fascinated by the play of light upon the landscape. He lived in Badacsony for 30 years, and his paintings of the lake are simply beautiful. Once you’ve taken a turn around the museum, strike out on the town’s most popular trip – the walk up
Badacsony Hill. The route is flanked by vineyards and dotted with wine shacks and larger cellars at which you can stop to sample scrumptious white wines on the way. The Szent Orbán provides a convenient resting place for some excellent food – and some more wine! – before you join a series of
marked trails running across the hill’s plateau. You’ll pass weird and wonderful rock formations; be sure to keep a beady eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches and tree-creepers. And starry-eyed couples should head for the
Rose Stone; it is said that if lovers sit on this boulder and think sweet thoughts of each other, they will be married within the year!
